Many of our clients have asked us questions about the subject of maturity and how to increase maturity in a work environment. This is a common concern for many men especially if a youthful appearance makes them lack the fit for a higher position at work.
In this case, wanting to be mature is not wanting to appear older. Looking youthful is a positive trait. Not looking old enough to take charge of important projects will not be in favor of your career. Looking unreliable is not a quality that you want to be associated with when you are a professional with experience and talent in the field.
Do your peers approach you about being incapable of properly taking care of work projects due to how you look? If so, here are some things to take into consideration to increase maturity in a work environment.
Young and Unprofessional Are Not the Same
There is nothing wrong with having a youthful appearance. If you have this blessing, exploit it as much as you can. It is a quality you will be grateful for in the future. In the meantime, focus your youth in your facial features rather than your overall appearance. How you represent yourself and the reputation you hold by your peers will go far in the work field.
Maturity Is an Attitude
In regards to attitude, we are not suggesting to change your personality or pretend to be someone you are not. Have an attitude that reflects your body language and presence that reflects confidence and security.
Confidence is something that tends to increase with age and experience. In most cases, when you already know what you are doing you stand differently. You will become more assertive in your actions that can be shown through your posture. Standing tall with your shoulders back, looking people in the eyes, and grasping a strong handshake will completely change the way you are seen in the room. Confidence will increase your professionalism that others around you will notice.
Your Clothes Should Represent Your Position
As you improve in your work status, your apparel should improve as well. While moving up in the hierarchy, it will not be beneficial to wear hoodies, t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers to work. Especially if you hold a youthful appearance, you need to follow the dress code more heavily.
Match your style and outfits to your work environment. It is not necessary to forcefully wear a full suit every day and leave sporty items for your free time. Add seriousness and maturity to your wardrobe in the form of blazers, button-up shirts, and good quality semi-formal to formal outfits.
Don’t Forget the Grooming
The condition of your skin, hair, and beard are important aspects to increase your maturity in a work environment. It showcases how you care for yourself while giving hints to others on how you will be able to take care of other things.
If you are unable to implement small steps to take care of yourself, you will be at a disadvantage against people that do. Take time to get regular trims, take care of your skin, groom your beard and even go to the gym to take care of your body and health. You will see improvement in the way you look and feel but also the first impressionyou give to others
The Look Makes the Man
The biggest takeaway is to look the part with attitude and apparel. Wear properly fitted clothes, the right set of accessories and incorporate the correct style to fit your desired situation.
You want to dress like you own the place rather than going in for an interview wearing your older brother’s clothes. Dress to impress and don’t let your youthful appearance interfere with your qualifications in the field.
